About Your Child's First Visit
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), a child’s first dental visit should be scheduled around his/her first birthday, or within six months of the eruption of their first tooth. The most important part of this visit is getting to know the environment, doctor and staff. While we want your child’s first visit to our office to be a positive one, we understand that little ones may be quick to express their emotions. It is very common for little ones to make a little (or a lot) of noise during their first visit. That’s ok. We will use your help to get through the visit in the least stressful way possible.
We genuinely want your child’s first visit to our office to be a positive one. It is our goal that the first visit will help to establish a relationship of trust. Occasionally, it may take a few visits to get there. During the initial exam, we typically review your child’s medical history, take radiographs (x-rays) if indicated, give oral hygiene instructions and provide a detailed evaluation that will outline your existing dental condition as well as potential treatment recommendations. In most cases, we will also clean your child’s teeth during this visit. As a general rule, we typically do not perform dental treatment at the first visit.
Parents are welcome to accompany their children at their first visit. Depending on your child’s age and level of cooperation, we may ask that you continue to accompany them for their exams until such time that we feel they can graduate up to our “big kid room.” This typically happens around 3-4 years old, depending on the kiddo. Please know that we do not allow parents back for treatment (fillings, etc). As an exception, in some cases, the parents of children with extreme special needs are invited back to assist with treatment. We are aware that some parents do not agree with this philosophy of treatment. We respect your decision to seek treatment elsewhere that better aligns with what you desire for your kids.
If you would like to come by and visit our office and staff before scheduling your initial appointment, feel free to come by!
